Eaton Canyon and the
San Gabriel Mountains
In the
summer of 1875, John Muir climbed from the floor of Eaton Canyon, up the falls
to the summit of Mount Wilson in the San Gabriel Mountains. His description,
first printed for Century Magazine in July 1882 as "The Bee-Pastures
of California," and later published in 1894 as Chapter XVI of his book,
"The Mountains of California," is reproduced.
Historic Pasadena
This photograph
of Pasadena dated 1884 looks west along Colorado Street towards Fair Oaks
Avenue. Central School is in the center of this picture, located on the
south east corner of Fair Oaks and Colorado on land donated by Benjamin Davis
Wilson. Founded by the Indiana Colony, Pasadena derives it's name from a Chippewa
word meaning "Crown of the Valley."
