Eliot Junior High School
Charles W. Eliot Junior
High School
The Charles W. Eliot
Junior High School, located at 2184 North Lake Avenue, Altadena, opened in
September 1931, with 660 students. The dedication of the school took place
December 11, 1931. The Parent-Teacher Association and Fathers' Council
were organized immediately. During the first year, only students in the
seventh, eighth, and ninth grades were enrolled; however, tenth graders were
accommodated the following year. The west wing, including the auditorium
and music room, was still under construction when school opened. Two
bungalows were moved from the Franklin Junior High School, which was being
discontinued, and shop classes were installed in them. Located near the
business section of Altadena, the school was always been considered an Altadena
community center, loyally backed by the citizens of the area. A
gymnasium was completed in 1950 and two homemaking rooms and a band room were
built in 1953. Two new transportable classrooms were provided in September
1955. Two principals have served the school through 1956: Wallace A.
Newlin, 1931-48; and George W. Norene, 1948 to
